“Some Wounds Never Heal” — Nicki Chapman Breaks Down Over the Battle That Still Haunts Her Every Day.

Nicki Chapman, best known for her role on Escape to the Country, has bravely shared one of the darkest chapters of her life — the moment she was diagnosed in 2019 with a brain tumour roughly the size of a golf ball. In her deeply personal memoir, So Tell Me What You Want, the 57-year-old opens up about the shock, fear, and emotional turmoil that followed, calling it the most terrifying experience she has ever faced.

The diagnosis came out of nowhere. While recovering from knee surgery, Nicki suddenly began experiencing alarming symptoms, including blurred vision and difficulty speaking. At first, doctors suspected she had suffered a stroke, but further scans revealed a meningioma — a non-cancerous yet potentially dangerous brain tumour. The news left her stunned. She later admitted that having to inform her loved ones was one of the hardest moments, describing it as overwhelming and deeply distressing.

Nicki underwent surgery to remove part of the tumour, though some of it had to be left behind due to its delicate position. In an unexpected turn, the remaining tumour later disappeared on its own — something that even her doctors found remarkable. Despite the fear she endured, she says the experience changed her perspective, giving her a profound sense of gratitude for life. She also prepared for the worst at the time, even putting her affairs in order as a precaution.

Reflecting on that period, Nicki shared that the diagnosis forced her to confront life in a way she never had before. She realized just how much she cherished her life, but also came to terms with the uncertainty, telling herself that whatever happened, she had already been incredibly fortunate. That mindset helped her find strength when she needed it most.

Even now, speaking about that time remains difficult. Nicki admits that revisiting those memories often brings her to tears, which is why she chooses to mentally “lock them away,” keeping them in what she describes as a filing cabinet in her mind. For her, it’s a way to keep moving forward without constantly reliving the pain.

Throughout her journey, her husband, Dave Shackleton, was a constant source of support. She acknowledges that the experience was just as challenging — if not more so — for those closest to her, but his presence never wavered.

In March 2022, Nicki received life-changing news: the tumour had completely disappeared. The moment was so emotional that she broke down in tears upon hearing it, overwhelmed with relief and disbelief.

Despite everything she has been through, Nicki is determined not to let her illness define her. She continues to work closely with the National Health Service and undergo regular check-ups, but her focus remains on living fully and appreciating each day.

Her story is one of courage, resilience, and perspective — a powerful reminder that even in life’s most frightening moments, it’s possible to find strength, hope, and a renewed appreciation for every second we have.
