This is the story in brief. Noelia spent her early years in a deeply unstable environment in Barcelona — her parents lost custody, and she grew up partly in shelters. In 2022, when she was just 21, she became the victim of a brutal gang assault. The trauma left lasting scars: she developed severe clinical depression and attempted to take her own life twice. The second attempt — a fall from a fifth-floor height — resulted in permanent paralysis.
By 2024, after two long years confined to medical institutions and living bedridden, Noelia made the difficult decision to request euthanasia. She went through every required step, including psychological evaluations and therapy sessions, and ultimately received approval. Medical professionals from multiple fields agreed that her condition met all legal criteria: it was irreversible, involved constant suffering, deprived her of a полноценная life, and she remained fully capable of making a conscious, informed choice.
At that stage, her father — with whom she had a strained and complicated relationship — stepped in to oppose the decision. He insisted she needed further psychiatric care and argued that her death would bring him immense pain. With support from the group “Christian Lawyers,” he launched a legal challenge that turned into a prolonged, two-year court battle.
The case reached its conclusion yesterday, when the European Court of Human Rights declined to overturn the authorization for euthanasia. The procedure is now scheduled for Thursday, March 26. Just hours before, Spanish television aired an interview in which Noelia calmly explained the reasons behind her choice.
Communities in Spain, where many called for her life to be saved at any cost. At the same time, some seemed to overlook the years of trauma she endured, her repeated suicide attempts, and the long, determined fight she went through to secure the right to decide for herself.
