Brigitte Bardot was never secretive about the fact that motherhood was not part of the life she wanted. In her memoir Initiales B.B., she spoke with striking honesty about her feelings, revealing that when she became pregnant in 1960, she did not feel emotionally prepared to have a child. That year, she gave birth to her only son, Nicolas, from her marriage to actor Jacques Charrier.
Bardot described her pregnancy in deeply unsettling terms, comparing it to something foreign growing inside her rather than a moment of joy. She admitted she lacked the stability and inner strength she believed a child needed, writing that she felt too fragile, lost, and overwhelmed by the chaos of fame to be a mother.
Nicolas was born at home in Paris on January 11, 1960. After Bardot and Charrier divorced two years later, legal custody went to his father, though Nicolas was largely raised by his paternal grandparents. Bardot later acknowledged that she had not been capable of providing the emotional foundation her son deserved, explaining that she herself felt uprooted, unbalanced, and in need of support.
Before the memoir was published, both Nicolas and Charrier attempted to block certain passages from appearing in the book. In the same memoir, Bardot also spoke openly about two abortions earlier in her life, one of which nearly cost her life.
