In a small desert town near the Arizona-Utah border, three children who went missing over two years ago have been found alive. The children vanished from Beaver County, Utah, in October 2022, leaving authorities puzzled until a tip about their possible location was received in late August.
At the time, investigators suspected the children’s father might have been behind their disappearance and concealment. The children were eventually discovered in Fredonia, Arizona, living with their grandmother. Further investigation revealed that family members had deliberately hidden their whereabouts, with assistance from others in the community.
The children’s aunt and grandmother have been arrested in connection with the case, while their father is still at large. The family is reportedly linked to the Fundamentalist Latter-day Saint (FLDS) church, a religious group known for controversial practices like child trafficking, child marriage, and abuse.
According to a statement from the Fredonia Police Department, the children were safely returned to their mother following cooperation between law enforcement agencies in Arizona and Utah. The department expressed gratitude to everyone involved and noted that the investigation is ongoing.
Fredonia, a small town with a population of about 1,200, is located near the North Rim of the Grand Canyon. In December, YouTuber Peter Santanello interviewed former FLDS members Sam and Melissa, who discussed their experiences growing up in the church. They described a community where young girls were often married off and men lived in fear of the church’s strict leadership, particularly under Warren Jeffs, the now-imprisoned leader.
Sam, who grew up in a polygamous family with 36 siblings, explained the oppressive atmosphere within the church, where marriages were arranged by Jeffs and young girls were assigned to older men. He and Melissa shared how men lived under constant pressure to be perfect, fearing expulsion by Jeffs, who used individuals as examples to enforce obedience.
Warren Jeffs is currently serving a life sentence after being convicted of child sexual assault charges.
