A Shocking Miss on Wheel of Fortune Quickly Turned Into an Internet Frenzy. (Video)

A recent episode of Wheel of Fortune ignited major controversy online after viewers reacted strongly to a Bonus Round puzzle featured during the February 14 broadcast. Social media quickly filled with heated opinions, as many fans called the puzzle confusing, awkward, and even unfair. Some viewers questioned whether the final answer could truly be considered a proper “phrase,” while others defended the challenge and argued contestants should have solved it easily.

Contestant Conner Kemmsies, a commercial pilot from California, made it to the Bonus Round after collecting more than $19,000 in cash and prizes, including a whale-watching getaway to Baja California. With family members cheering him on from the audience, Conner stepped into the final round appearing calm, excited, and ready for a potentially huge win.

The category for the final puzzle was “Phrase.” Once the standard letters R, S, T, L, N, and E were revealed, Conner selected C, M, D, and A to fill in the remaining spaces. The board then showed “_ D _ D M _ _ _ M E _ _ R _.” He quickly guessed the beginning, saying “I DID MY,” but struggled to complete the final words before the clock ran out. Seconds later, the answer was revealed: “I DID MY HOMEWORK.”

Conner laughed off the loss and jokingly told host Ryan Seacrest that homework was no longer part of his life because he was out of school. Although the atmosphere on stage stayed cheerful, reactions online were far more intense. Many longtime viewers argued the answer sounded more like an ordinary sentence than a recognizable phrase typically used in the Bonus Round.

The debate rapidly spread across social media platforms, dividing fans into opposing camps. Some viewers insisted the puzzle was simple and completely fair, while others described it as one of the strangest and most frustrating Bonus Round answers the show has presented in years. Critics especially focused on the category itself, claiming the wording did not match what audiences usually expect from a “Phrase” puzzle.

The controversy didn’t stop there. Some fans also complained after the Bonus Round prize wheel once again landed on the familiar $40,000 reward. This sparked renewed speculation among viewers who believe the wheel has become repetitive and too predictable compared to earlier seasons of the show.

Despite the backlash, the moment generated enormous attention online and became one of the week’s biggest television talking points. Whether viewers saw the puzzle as unfair or perfectly reasonable, the debate once again proved that Wheel of Fortune still knows how to keep audiences talking long after the episode ends.
