The young man snatched a piece of bread from the homeless man’s hands, threw it on the ground, and started stomping on it with his feet. All onlookers were shocked by the man’s actions, but soon something unexpected happened.
A narrow city street ran between old brick houses. An elderly homeless man in a dirty jacket and a worn cap stood by the garbage cans. Next to him sat his dog, a large white mongrel who had barely eaten anything for days.
The last few days had been particularly difficult. The man and his dog had been wandering around yards and alleys, peering into trash cans, trying to find something to eat. Sometimes they found scraps of food, sometimes nothing at all. They had been eating cold leftovers, old pieces, dirty food that a normal person would never touch. But when hunger grips your stomach, you stop choosing.
That day, luck suddenly smiled upon him. In one of the boxes, he noticed an almost whole loaf of bread. The bread looked fresh, as if someone had just thrown it away. The man carefully picked it up, brushed off the dirt, and stared at his find for a long time.
He sighed softly and shook his head.
“People don’t even realize what they’re throwing away…” he muttered under his breath.
Perhaps, he thought, these people had never found themselves in a situation where an ordinary piece of bread seemed like a real treasure.
The man carefully broke the bread into two pieces. He gave one piece to the dog. The dog carefully took it in its teeth and immediately began to eat. The man wanted to eat the other piece himself. He was about to raise the bread to his lips when he heard quick footsteps nearby.
A young man in a military uniform approached him.
Without a word, he abruptly snatched the bread from the homeless man’s hands. Then he threw it onto the wet asphalt and began to roughly stomp on it with his feet.
The people on the street froze. Some stopped at the entrance to the store, others just stood on the sidewalk, watching what was happening.
The man didn’t understand what was happening. He stared at the soldier with wide eyes.
“Why…” he said quietly.
But the boy did not answer and continued to crush the bread with his heavy shoes until only wet crumbs remained.
The dog stepped aside and whined softly, as if he too felt the injustice of this scene.
People around started whispering.
– What is he doing?
– Why are you mocking a person like that?
– He has nothing anyway…
The homeless man lowered his head. At that moment he felt not so much hunger as bitterness. It seemed to him that the world had become completely cruel and cold.
And then the young man did something that shocked the entire street.

But the boy suddenly stopped. He looked at the man and calmly said:
– Wait here. Don’t go anywhere.
After saying these words, he turned and quickly headed for the nearest shop on the corner of the street.
People exchanged glances, unsure of what was happening. Several minutes passed. And suddenly a young soldier reappeared from the shop. He was carrying two large bags.
He approached the homeless man and handed him the bags.
— There’s food for you and your dog. And warm clothes.
The man looked at him in confusion, not understanding why he had acted so cruelly at first.
The soldier sighed slightly and added quietly:
“I overheard the bakery owner telling the clerk. A rat broke into their store overnight and was running around on the pastries. They were going to throw the bread away. It could have been contaminated.”
The man slowly looked down at the bags. Inside were fresh produce, canned goods, several loaves of bread, and a large bag of dog food. On top was a neatly folded warm jacket.
He looked up again, but the man was already walking down the street.
The soldier did not turn around and said nothing more.
