That was the reality for Tomm Tennent, a newborn whose appearance left doctors in complete disbelief. In 1993, in South East Australia, something truly extraordinary happened. A baby named Tomm Tennent was born with a rare condition that puzzled medical professionals. Even before his arrival, prenatal scans revealed that something unusual was happening, forcing his parents to confront an incredibly difficult choice.
Tomm’s father, Geoff Tennent, ultimately made a decision that shaped their family’s future. He later explained that they chose to trust fate and continue forward, believing that whatever was meant to happen would happen. And so, Tomm’s remarkable journey began.
No medical test could have fully prepared anyone for the severity of his condition. When his parents first saw him in the delivery room, they were overwhelmed. His mother, Debbie, described the emotional shock she felt when he was placed in her arms—her heart racing with surprise, yet filled with love as she held her baby close. Doctors, meanwhile, struggled to understand what they were seeing.
At first, there was no clear explanation and no obvious treatment. All they could do was hope that as Tomm grew, his skin would gradually adapt and the deep folds would lessen over time.
After nearly two and a half months in the hospital, researchers finally uncovered a crucial clue. Tomm’s body contained extremely high levels of hyaluronic acid—the same substance that gives Shar Pei puppies their wrinkled skin. In dogs, this material decreases as they mature, causing their skin to tighten. Doctors hoped Tomm’s body would follow a similar path.
Dr. Andrew Ramsden believed that improvement would come with age—and thankfully, he was right. As Tomm grew older, his skin slowly changed and began to settle, just as predicted.
Still, childhood was not without hardship. Tomm faced teasing and social challenges because of his appearance. Although he retained some subtle physical differences, they became far less pronounced than they had been at birth.
Today, more than thirty years later, Tomm’s story continues to amaze those who hear it. He keeps a relatively low profile, but glimpses into his life suggest that he is thriving. He appears to be happily married to Hannah and living in Frankston, Victoria. His personal motto reflects the resilience that carried him through life: “Life is simple.
