At just 23 years old, Dane—a young farmer—decided to take an unconventional route. While others chased stable jobs and long-term careers, he chose to follow a different dream: building his own house from the ground up.
Knowing that his limited income wouldn’t support a mortgage and unwilling to live in debt or spend decades saving, Dane made a daring decision. He set out to construct a home with his own two hands.
Though he lacked building experience, he had a secret weapon—his father, a seasoned carpenter. With his dad’s guidance and help from friends, Dane was able to push forward with the project much faster than expected.
On a shoestring budget, he sourced bargain materials: $30 windows, a free stove, and other discounted supplies. A year later, his hard work paid off in the form of a cozy, functional little home that met all his basic needs.
The house may be simple, but it’s warm and livable. A wood-burning stove keeps it heated, meals are made on a gas burner, and light comes from a kerosene lamp. He stays connected with the world through a mobile phone with internet access—his only modern convenience.
A kind neighbor also gave him a small piece of land, where he now grows his own produce and plans to raise chickens in the future.
“I’ve always preferred the quiet,” Dane says. “I never saw myself living in a busy city. My parents didn’t get it at first, but after a few visits, they saw how content I am—and that’s all that matters to them.”
Despite the simplicity, Dane isn’t missing anything important. He lives comfortably and finds fulfillment in the peaceful life he’s built.
“My friends think I’m a little crazy,” he laughs. “They can’t imagine life without electricity or a TV. But I’m never bored—there’s always something to work on. I just don’t get the obsession with screens.”
He’s since made close friends among other local farmers and enjoys a close-knit community.
While he’s currently single, Dane is realistic—he knows his lifestyle isn’t for everyone. If it ever becomes necessary, he’s open to expanding his home. But buying one outright? Not a chance. The cost of a basic cottage is far too high for his liking, often exceeding $180,000.
Nestled far from the noise of urban life, his small self-built home might not be for everyone—but for Dane, it’s perfect. He believes the most important thing is being happy where you are, no matter what others might say.
