Sad news has surfaced as an investigation begins into the unexpected deaths of Oscar-winning actor Gene Hackman and his wife, Betsy Arakawa.

Santa Fe County Sheriff Adan Mendoza confirmed Thursday morning that the 95-year-old actor and his 64-year-old wife, a classical pianist, were found dead in their Santa Fe, New Mexico home, along with their dog. Hackman’s daughter has speculated that the deaths may have been caused by carbon monoxide poisoning. Hackman, famous for his roles in Superman, The Royal Tenenbaums, and Bonnie and Clyde, earned two Academy Awards—Best Actor for The French Connection in 1972 and Best Supporting Actor for Unforgiven in 1993. He married Betsy in 1991 and had three children with his first wife, Faye Maltese.

This heartbreaking incident has left fans grieving the loss of one of Hollywood’s most celebrated stars.
