Tomiko Itokan, the world’s oldest woman from Japan, has passed away at the age of 116, as reported by NHK. She died on December 29th at a nursing home in Ashiya, Hyogo Prefecture.

Born on May 23, 1908, in Osaka, Tomiko was the eldest of three sisters.

She relocated to Ashiya about 30 years ago. After the death of the previous world record-holder, a 117-year-old woman in Spain, last year, Tomiko Itokan became the new titleholder. Before that, she was recognized as Japan’s oldest woman.
